Their existing vehicle monitoring systems were outdated and lacked the real-time capabilities necessary to respond swiftly to hazardous conditions and operational inefficiencies. The client needed a solution that could provide real-time data in some of the most remote areas, enhance safety protocols, and optimize transportation routes to reduce fuel costs and improve productivity.

Who Is Our Client?

Orica is the world’s largest provider of commercial explosives and innovative blasting systems to the mining, quarrying, oil and gas and construction markets, a leading supplier of sodium cyanide for gold extraction, and a specialist provider of ground support services in mining and tunnelling.

What Was The Problem?

Ordinarily, to conduct an underground explosion, a technician would be required to approach the mine face using a cherry picker and manually feed the explosives into the mine face. Avatel revolutionises this process by enabling the technician to remain in the vehicle’s cab.

 

The engineering team at SAPHI plays a lead role in the development of the low-level control code that remotely delivers the explosives as well as the software for the implementation of the user interface and 3rd party app integration into the control system. SAPHI continues to support, maintain and upgrade the software to ensure the ongoing success of the system.

In an ambitious effort to combat climate change and restore biodiversity, Dendra, a leading environmental technology company, embarked on a significant project to restore mangrove forests in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Dendra’s innovative approach, RestorationOSTM combines field ecology best-practice with high-resolution imagery, analysed through an AI-enabled data platform, to drive world-class ecosystem restoration outcomes. With a proven track record in restoring diverse ecosystems, from arid lands to mangroves, Dendra sought to leverage its technological and ecological expertise to address the pressing need for mangrove restoration in the UAE.

What Was The Problem?

The ambition was as vast as the landscape itself— to restore 27.3M coastal mangroves. Recognizing mangroves as both vital carbon sinks and natural coastal protectors. To fulfill their ambitious goal, Dendra required an advanced drone-based platform for mangrove seeding, designed for wide-scale seed dispersal. This state-of-the-art system had to be developed and deployed within just 3 months, showcasing the urgency and the innovative drive behind their environmental mission.

What Was The Solution?

In collaboration with Dendra, SAPHI’s experienced development team combined its cross-functional expertise in mechatronics, electrical and computer engineering to develop the innovative drone-based mangrove seeding platform. The team at SAPHI were responsible for the design, development, manufacture and roll out of the technology capable of reaching the target of 27.3 million coastal mangroves.

 

The solution was a fleet of six custom-designed seed spreading systems capable of efficiently and effectively distributing mangrove seeds across designated restoration areas. These systems were engineered to be robust and versatile, capable of operating in the challenging environmental conditions of the UAE. Our team supported the project remotely as they were operating in the UAE and now have our sights set on future collaborations right here in Australia.

What Were The Outcomes?

  • The system has successfully operated in the UAE testing environment.
  • Achieved the capability to seed up to 100,000 mangroves daily, showcasing exceptional efficiency and scalability.
