AI Imaging For Traffic Detection

Our team at SAPHI developed an edge compute AI imaging system for traffic detection that integrates into the Zhaga connectors of street lights. We designed the system to capture and process data on the device before communicating the data across the widely popular LoRA network.

Who Is This Solution Targeted At?

The AI imaging system we developed is primarily targeted at local government to provide a cost-effective solution to unlock valuable insights into traffic movements around the LGA. The solution provides a rich data set to be used for decision making around infrastructure upgrades and developments.

What Was The Problem?

AI imaging systems on the market today demand a significant upfront capital investment to purchase, configure and deploy. Not to mention the added subscription costs many of these AI imaging companies charge. Furthermore, these systems cannot utilise the free LoRA network that many smart cities use for communication between devices to the database.

What Was The Solution?

We developed a low-cost machine vision sensor system that integrates into the Zhaga connectors found on the street lights of many smart cities and leverages open-source AI models for accurate traffic recognition.

The AI imaging system would leverage the open-source model to detect traffic before breaking down that information into an 8-bit packet that could be communicated over the LoRA network to a database. We were able to achieve this through edge computing – which simply means that we are completing the processing and packaging of information on the actual device before sending it to the database.

What Were The Outcomes?

  • 75% saving per imaging unit
  • 97.5% accuracy rate
  • $0 additional data storage costs

What Skills Did SAPHI Use To Implement The Solution?

The tech stack and experience required for the AI imaging system included a broad range of skills including:

  • Python
  • AI model integration
  • LoRAWan configuration
  • Zhaga connector integration
  •  Power supply management

What Support Did SAPHI Offer After Completion?
